Groepie

What is Groepie?

Groepie lets you create a group with other Tikkie users to keep track of your expenses together and settle up using a Tikkie. That’s pretty handy for a weekend away or for shared household expenses, for example.

How does it work?

When creating a Tikkie, select Groepie, then invite your friends who you’d like to join you in keeping track of expenses. It’s really easy to create invitations in WhatsApp, but also in other ways like by email. And if a friend forgets to join Groepie, you can simply add them manually. The rest of the group can add and share all the expenses in the meantime.

Time to settle up? Your Groepie will automatically show the running total. Tap the ‘Running total’ button and send a Tikkie right away by tapping a name. Expecting more money back from a certain friend? You can also settle up with just one person. After you’ve done that, the running total will be updated and your Groepie will carry on as normal.

How do I create a Groepie?

  • Open the Tikkie app.

  • Tap ‘+’ and select Groepie at the top.

  • Enter a description for your Groepie.

  • Tap ‘Next’ to finish creating your Groepie.

How do I invite friends to my Groepie?

There are two ways to do this. In the Tikkie overview, swipe the Groepie to the left and tap the share icon to invite friends, or simply open your Groepie and tap the icon in the top right. You’ll then see who’s in your Groepie and can invite friends too. Inviting friends is easy – just send an invitation link through WhatsApp or another app.

Pressed for time? Add your friends manually, so you can add and share expenses in the meantime. Don’t forget to invite your friends though, as they can’t join the Groepie without an invitation.

Once you’ve invited them, then they can tap the invitation link and indicate they’ve been added manually. Now they can pay their share of the expenses you’ve assigned to them. That’s convenient, isn’t it?

How do I add expenses?

It’s really easy:

  • Open the Tikkie app and tap your Groepie in the overview.

  • Tap ‘Add expense’.

  • Enter what the expense is for and how much it is in total.

  • For ‘Who’s paying?’, enter everyone who the expense is being shared with.

  • If everyone in the Groepie owes the same amount, tap ‘Everyone 1x’. This way, everyone pays the same amount of money.

  • If someone owes twice or maybe three times as much, tap ‘0x’ next to their name and then tap the plus symbol until you get the correct number. Great for when a friend has two drinks and everyone else only has one.

  • If everyone owes a different amount, you can enter an amount manually in the square box next to each name.

  • If you make a mistake, just tap ‘Reset’.

  • If a friend pays for something and wants to share the expense, tap the ‘Paid by...’ bar and select who paid.

Sometimes an expense can’t be shared equally. In that case, the amount will be rounded up for some friends so they’ll pay €0.01 more.

How do I change or remove expenses?

In your Groepie, go to the expense you want to change or delete. At the bottom, tap the pen to change the expense, or tap the bin to delete the expense.

Why can’t I change an expense after someone leaves my Groepie?

This is because the expenses allocated to this friend have been locked. To leave a Groepie, the running total must be €0. This means your friend has settled up and paid what they owe or been paid what they are owed. Expenses cannot be changed because otherwise the amount paid or received would no longer be correct. And that wouldn’t be very fair, of course.

What is the running total and how is it calculated?

The running total shows how much money you’re expecting back from your friends or how much you need to pay them. It is based on the expenses added.

How do I settle the running total?

You can settle the running total any time you want. So you don’t have to wait for everyone to add their expenses. Tap the ‘Running total’ bar. Here you can see who you owe or who owes you money.

If you’re expecting money back, tap the name and send a Tikkie.

If you need to pay someone, ask your friend to send you a Tikkie via the Groepie. A €950 limit applies to payment requests through Groepie, just like with a Tikkie. You can send a Tikkie by going to the Groepie, tapping the ‘Running total’ bar and then tapping your name. After you’ve done that, the running total will be updated and the Groepie will carry on as normal.

I need to pay one of my friends back. How do I do that?

Ask your friend to send you a Tikkie via the Groepie. To do this, your friend needs to tap the ‘Running total’ bar and then tap your name.

How do I leave a Groepie?

To leave a Groepie, you must have a running total of €0. So settle your expenses first with a Tikkie. Once your running total is €0, swipe the Groepie to the left in the overview and tap the bin, or tap the icon in the top right. Leave the Groepie by tapping your own name. Bear in mind that when you leave a Groepie, it will disappear from your overview, so you’ll no longer be able to view or change it.

How do I remove a friend from my Groepie?

If your friend joined the Groepie via an invitation link, you can’t remove that person yourself. Settle the outstanding expenses with a Tikkie, then your friend can leave the Groepie themself once their running total is €0.

If there is a bin icon next to someone’s name, that means you can remove them. This is because you added them manually or they no longer have access to the Tikkie app.

  • Open your Groepie.

  • Tap the gear icon in the top right-hand corner.

  • If it says ‘Manually added’ or ‘No longer has access to Tikkie’ under the name, you can delete that person by tapping their name.

Note: you can only remove someone if their running total is €0. So always make sure that their expenses have been settled first.

Do I need to download the Tikkie app to use Groepie?

To use Groepie properly, you need to have the Tikkie app. The app shows you exactly who’s in a Groepie and what expenses have been added. You can also add friends and add and settle expenses yourself. If you can’t download Tikkie, ask a friend to add you manually. The following question explains how to do this.

One of my friends doesn’t have Tikkie. Can they join a Groepie?

To use Groepie properly, it’s best to download the Tikkie app. If that’s not possible, you can add users manually. However, they won’t be able to add or change expenses themselves. Others will have to do that for them.

If you need to settle the running total for someone you added manually, make sure you are aware of the following:

  • If you need someone to pay you, send a Tikkie from the Groepie. The running total is automatically updated when you have been paid.

  • If you need to pay someone, you’ll have arrange some other type of payment request or transfer. Don’t forget to note this repayment in your Groepie, as this doesn’t happen automatically.

I have added multiple current accounts to Tikkie. Can I choose which current account to link to my Groepie?

Groepie is automatically linked to your favourite current account. To see which current account this is, tap ‘More’ in the bottom-right of the app and then ‘My current accounts’. If you want to change your favourite current account, tap the pen icon and then ‘Set this IBAN to my default’.

Can I add expenses in another currency?

No, unfortunately this isn’t yet possible with Groepie.

Is Groepie free?

Yes, Groepie is free to use.

Is Groepie secure?

Groepie is part of the Tikkie app, which is brought to you by ABN AMRO and meets strict security requirements – so yes it is. To find out more about how we do our best to protect your data, you can read the Tikkie privacy statement.
